Yield = (ears/acre × kernels/ear) / kernels per bushel
The yield component method estimates corn yield before harvest. Count ears in a known fraction of an acre (e.g., 17 ft 5 in of a 30" row = 1/1000th acre). Count kernel rows and kernels per row on several representative ears. Yield (bu/acre) = (ears/acre × rows/ear × kernels/row) / fudge factor. The fudge factor (typically 75,000-90,000) accounts for kernel size and weight — smaller/lighter kernels use a larger number. Average US corn yield is ~175 bu/acre. Record yields exceed 600 bu/acre in contests. Accurate pre-harvest estimation helps with marketing decisions, storage planning, and insurance claims.
