Choosing the Right Dog Crate

A properly sized crate should be large enough for your dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Measure nose-to-tail-base (length) and floor-to-ear-tip or top-of-head (height), then add 2-4 inches to each. Standard sizes: 22" for toy breeds, 24" for small breeds, 30" for medium, 36" for intermediate, 42" for large, 48" for XL, 54" for giant breeds. For puppies, buy adult-size with a divider panel. Wire crates offer ventilation; plastic crates are airline-approved. Never use the crate as punishment. With proper introduction, most dogs view their crate as a safe den.
