Why Cycling Beats Driving for the Environment

The average passenger car emits about 2.31 kg of CO2 per liter of gasoline burned, or roughly 120-200 g CO2 per km. A bicycle produces effectively zero direct emissions. Switching a 10 km commute from car to bike saves approximately 500 kg of CO2 annually. Beyond emissions, cycling reduces road congestion, particulate matter, tire and brake dust pollution, and noise. The health benefits are enormous: regular cyclists have a 41% lower risk of premature death compared to non-cyclists. Cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam, where cycling rates exceed 25% of commutes, consistently rank highest in air quality and livability indices.
