Find the right grill area for your cookouts.
The rule of thumb is 72 square inches of cooking area per burger-eater. A standard burger patty occupies about 16 in² but you need space between items for even heat and flipping. Steaks and ribs need more room. Grill sizes: Small/portable (200-300 in²) serves 2-4, Medium (400-500 in²) serves 4-8, Large (600-800 in²) serves 8-12, and Extra-large (900+ in²) for big gatherings. Always add 25% buffer for indirect cooking zones and vegetables. Two-zone cooking (direct and indirect heat) is essential for versatility, meaning you need at least 50% more area than the food itself occupies.
