How much can you save by reducing paper use?

The Environmental Cost of Paper

The paper industry is the 4th largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions among manufacturers. One tonne of paper requires 17 trees, 26,500 liters of water, and 4,100 kWh of energy to produce. A single A4 sheet uses about 10 liters of water in its production. The average office worker uses 10,000 sheets per year — equivalent to 1.2 trees. Globally, 400 million tonnes of paper are produced annually, consuming 40% of all commercially harvested timber. However, paper is one of the most successfully recycled materials: recycled paper uses 70% less energy and 50% less water. Going digital isn't automatically greener — data centers consume significant energy — but reducing unnecessary printing (duplicate copies, single-sided printing, unread reports) can cut office paper use by 30-50% immediately. Double-sided printing alone reduces consumption by 50%.
