Understanding Water Demand

Global average domestic water use varies enormously: from 20 liters/person/day in some developing regions to over 500 L/day in the US. The WHO recommends a minimum of 50-100 L/person/day for basic needs (drinking, cooking, hygiene). A typical breakdown: toilet flushing (30%), showers/baths (25%), laundry (20%), kitchen (10%), drinking (5%), garden (10%). Low-flow fixtures can reduce consumption by 30-50%: dual-flush toilets save 10,000 L/year, low-flow showerheads save 20,000 L/year. Garden irrigation is often the largest seasonal demand: a 100 m² lawn in a temperate climate needs about 3 L/m²/day during summer. Drip irrigation is 90% efficient versus 60% for sprinklers. Globally, agriculture consumes 70% of freshwater withdrawals, industry 20%, and domestic use only 10%. By 2030, global water demand is projected to exceed supply by 40%, making conservation essential.
